The largest office complex in Seattle is home to the global e-commerce company Amazon, employing more than 1800 people. Most striking are the three centrally located Amazon spheres. The three glass domes are covered with pentagonal and hexagonal panels and serve as a lounge and workspace for employees. They were designed by NBBJ and landscaping company Site Workshop and are equipped with Jaga heat exchangers. These contribute to preventing condensation on large windows. We adjusted the dimensions so that they would fit into the design, which consists of many round shapes. They offer employees the opportunity to step away from the office for a few moments and immerse themselves in nature. The 40,000 plants and trees in the spheres ensure a healthy living environment in the spheres. WSP-engineers from Seattle chose Jaga’s Low H2O T15 heat exchangers to minimize condensation along the circumference of the spheres’ internal viewing platforms. The air humidity in the spheres was high and caused quite some condensation on the glass. A total of 250 heat exchangers were installed. Over time though, more heating units were needed to completely eliminate the condensation. Therefore, Slim Clima Canals were installed at the base of the spheres to ensure additional "fan-powered" heating. Like Amazon’s skyscrapers, the Spheres are partially heated by recycled heat generated by a nearby data centre. The project exceeded Seattle’s stringent energy code requirements by 20%, earning the building the LEED Gold certification. The code allows 0.90 watts per square foot, but Amazon in the Regrade only requires 0.72 watts per square foot.
